Adult Acne Medications You Can Use

Adult acne can happen to anyone even if this happens more often to women than men. If this skin disorder does strike and home treatment doesn’t work, it is time to try something else to make it go away. The person should try using some form of medication.

The one is on the top of list according to a consumer survey is benzoyl peroxide. The person can buy this in either gel or cream form and choose from different concentrations. There is 2.5, 5 and 10%.

Some doctors claim that 2.5% is more than enough to treat adult acne. The use of anything higher is just to make sure all the bacteria has been killed when this is applied on the affected area of the body.

People who use benzoyl peroxide for the first time will experience dryness or skin irritation in the first week but will gradually disappear later on. This can be achieved by starting with a low concentration then building it up.

Benzoyl peroxide will make the skin peel so that the dirty skin can be removed clearing the pores. This is also used in other things such as teeth whitening or dying the hair.

Another drug that the person can try is salicylic acid. This has to be applied using pads that have been proven to slow down shedding of cells inside the follicles, which prevents clogging. It can also break down the buildup of blackheads or whiteheads, which are other forms of acne.

People who try this should not combine it with other skin care products that are purchased over the counter. This may cause damage or complications when the person uses it to treat adult acne.

Sulfur is probably one of the oldest medicines to treat acne. Many companies have used this as an ingredient in soaps, creams and washes. The person can use this just like ordinary soap that can help whiten the skin.

Just like salicylic acid, it helps get rid of whiteheads and blackheads. The only downside to it is that it produces a bad smell and at times certain side effects such as redness or peeling. Those who experience this should consult with a dermatologist to find out if the person should try another product to deal with adult acne.

Resorcinol is another product that has been known to treat acne and other skin disorders. This is sometimes used with other acne medications that are prescribed by the doctor.

Tests have shown this helps breakdown hard and rough skin making it smooth later on once the blackheads or whiteheads have been removed. People will experience the use of this product to be irritating.

The person should not use this then with soaps and astringents since it could just make matters worse.

Before using any of these medications, it is best to consult with a doctor. This is because the person may be allergic to some of the ingredients that are used in any of these drugs, which only makes matters worse.

When the drug is given, the person should advise the doctor on the progress of the drug. If irritation or discomfort is felt for more than a week, the individual should discontinue using it so that the dermatologist can recommend another drug that can be used to treat adult acne.
