Acne Is Surrounded By Myths
Eating chocolate causes acne. Greasy foods will turn anyone into a "pizza face." Washing your face makes it go away.
There might not be a cure for acne, but there is one sure thing about the condition: It's surrounded by myths.
If the goal is to control or eliminate acne, one of the smartest things to do is to first debunk the myths that surround this condition. First off, there is no known cause for the condition that's 100 percent agreed upon by people in the medical profession. It's thought a lot of different factors can come into play to create acne.
The myths surrounding acne are many and include:
* Natural light. There are many who believe the sun will cure the condition. It might be true that a little sun makes an acne break out look better, but that state will be short-lived. The sun can, in fact, irritate acne and make it worse. Furthermore, the harmful rays from the sun can add to and even create other skin conditions. So, the best bet is to not use the sun as a way to get rid of acne.
* Chocolate, sweets. It seems there's no real truth to this one. While some people might experience breakouts after eating chocolate, no real definitive connection has been found.
* Washing. Many people think acne is created by "dirty skin." Inasmuch, they wash and wash, hoping to make it go away. This is a bad idea. The skin should be washed about two times a day, unless there is an extenuating circumstance to do otherwise. Washing acne prone skin too much causes irritation, which leads to more breakouts.
* Greasy foods. There is no real connection here although it's not a good idea to laden a diet with greasy foods.
* Popping pimples helps. Wrong! This can lead to scarring, irritation and more breakouts, so just don't do it.
While these are some of the predominate myths that surround acne, there are many more. For those who really want to treat and prevent the condition, the best bet is to sort through the misconceptions and proceed with a treatment plan that's solid.
The best way to effectively control acne will be individualized. What works for one person might not work for another. Some people will find mild soap, water and a healthy diet assist. Others will require prescription medications and time to make the condition pass.
There's nothing fun about acne and anyone who suffers from it wants a cure. Unfortunately there's no set path here. It takes times, patience and a willingness to try different things to find the right way to treat an individual case.
