Baby Pimples Should Not Be A Cause For Panic
No mother-to-be expects to hold her brand new angel and see a face full of pimples, but sometimes that's the case. Called baby acne, the condition is very similar to that which presents in the teen and young adult years, but it's really no cause for alarm.
Just like the teenage version, baby acne doesn't have a single known cause, and there really aren't any terribly effective treatments for it either. Since baby skin is so sensitive and delicate, it's generally recommended that it be left alone to pass and heal on its own.
Baby acne is thought to present due to the hormonal changes little ones undergo following their separation from their mother's body. With a whole lot of ups and downs going on, the acne it seems just pops out in some babies, but not all. Other possible causes include post-natal medications and even a reaction to formula.
On the upside, this condition typically goes away all on its own - in time. Some babies will see a case pass entirely in a few days, but others may have the condition for several weeks and maybe even longer. It may not even show up until after the first few weeks of life.
First-time parents tend to get a little upset by the condition's presence. There really is no need to do so. Baby acne doesn't come from dirt or a lack of hygiene. Scrubbing won't make it go away. In fact, scrubbing can make it worse. It's typically recommended the only treatment for the condition is regular bathing with mild baby soap. Remember, newborn skin is incredibly delicate and only requires light sponge bathing. Acne being present doesn't mean this routine needs to change.
If a case of baby acne is particularly troublesome, some parents might try to medicate the skin. Resist this temptation. Teenage creams and adult treatments are not meant for baby's delicate skin. If some form of medications are required because of a severe case, let a doctor decide what should be used and how much.
While it's many a parent's dream that their newborn look like a child in commercials, this is often not the reality of the situation. Babies go through a lot to get into the world and their skin and appearance tend to show it. Don't despair though, the condition will pass.
If baby acne is a real concern, seek medical advice. Don't try to treat this or other skin conditions beyond minor diaper rash without professional assistance.
